Beginner’s Guide to Hair Colour: Highlights, Balayage, Toner and Permanent Colour Explained

Belle Ame's tranquil hairdressing appointments in Lancaster - quiet hair appointment.

Thinking about changing your hair colour, but not quite sure what to ask for?

You are definitely not alone.

Hair colour can feel like a whole new language. Permanent colour, toner, highlights, foils, balayage, root touch-ups, lived-in blonde, colour refreshes… it can all sound a bit confusing when all you really know is that you want your hair to look fresher, glossier, brighter, softer, richer, or just a bit more “you”.

At our Belle Ame hair salon in Lancaster, our expert hairstylists speak to clients all the time who say, “I don’t really know what I need, I just know what I like.” And honestly, that is absolutely fine. You do not need to arrive at the salon speaking fluent hairdresser. We’ll guide you through it.

Hair colour services can include permanent colour for grey coverage or richer tones, highlights or foils for brightness and dimension, toner to refine, soften or enhance the tone of coloured or lightened hair, balayage for a softer blended result, and glossing or refreshing services to revive faded colour. The right option depends on your current hair, your hair history, your desired result and how much maintenance you want.

This beginner’s guide explains the main types of hair colour in simple, friendly language, so you can feel more confident when booking your appointment or chatting to one of our experienced stylists.

What is permanent hair colour?

Permanent colour is usually what people mean when they talk about having their hair “dyed”.

It is often used when you want to cover greys, refresh your roots, deepen your colour, or create a more even all-over tone. At Belle Ame, our colour menu includes permanent colouring for short/roots, medium and long hair, making this a great option for clients who want a classic colour appointment rather than a full lightening service.

Permanent colour can be brilliant if your natural colour is growing through and you want it covered, or if your hair has started to feel dull and needs more richness and depth.

It is worth knowing that permanent colour is not usually the right route for making already-coloured hair significantly lighter. If you want to go much lighter, your stylist may recommend a lightening service instead, such as highlights, foils or balayage.

A simple way to think about permanent colour is this: it is great for coverage, richness, shine and consistency.

What is root colour?

If you already have permanent colour and your roots are growing through, you may not need your whole head coloured every time. Often, a root application is enough.

This is where your stylist applies colour to the new growth near your scalp, matching it to the rest of your hair. It keeps your colour looking fresh without unnecessarily colouring the lengths and ends every appointment.

Root colour is especially common for grey coverage, darker shades, brunettes, reds and clients who like a polished, even colour.

What are highlights and foils?

Highlights are one of the most well-known hair colour services, but they can still be misunderstood.

Highlights are often created by placing selected pieces of colour or lightness through the hair, commonly using foils to separate those sections from the rest of the hair.

A half head of highlights usually focuses on the most visible areas, such as the top, sides and around the face. A full head of highlights gives more all-over brightness or dimension and is better if you want the colour to be visible throughout the whole head.

Highlights can create lots of different effects. They can be fine and natural, soft and sun-kissed, bright and blonde, warm and coppery, rich and dimensional, or more noticeable and high-impact. It depends on the placement, the size of the sections, the colour chosen, and how much contrast you want.

Highlights are often a good choice if you want brighter blonde, soft caramel or honey tones through brunette hair, copper or red pieces for warmth, a lighter feel without colouring every strand, or fresh brightness around the face.

They are also useful if your colour feels a little flat and you want more movement, contrast and dimension.

What does a toner do?

A toner is one of those hair words people hear all the time, but do not always understand.

In simple terms, a toner helps refine, soften or enhance the tone of coloured or lightened hair.

It is often talked about with blondes because lightening hair can reveal yellow, orange or warm tones that need refining. But toners are not only for blonde hair. Toners, glosses or colour-refreshing services can also be used on brunette, balayage, caramel, copper, red, grey or silver tones to adjust the final result and make the colour look more polished.

For example, a toner might help turn raw yellow blonde into a more expensive-looking creamy blonde. It might soften warmth in brunette balayage, add richness to a copper tone, or give coloured hair a glossier finish.

At Belle Ame, highlight and colour services may require a toning service, depending on the result you want and what your hair needs. One of our expert hairstylists will be able to explain this during your consultation, so you know exactly why it is being recommended.

A simple way to think about toner is this: colour or lightener creates the base, toner perfects the tone.

What is balayage?

Balayage is a colouring technique where the hair is lightened in a softer, more blended way. The word balayage comes from the French word meaning “to sweep”, because the colour is traditionally painted onto the hair rather than placed in a very uniform pattern.

Balayage is loved because it can look natural, modern and effortless. It often creates brightness through the mid-lengths and ends, with a softer root area. This means it can grow out more gently than traditional highlights, with less of a strong regrowth line.

On our colour menu, you may see options such as a refresh balayage, classic balayage or balayage transformation. The right choice depends on your current colour, how much work is needed, and the result you want to achieve.

Balayage is often a good choice if you want soft, sun-kissed colour, a lived-in blonde look, less obvious regrowth, brightness without high-maintenance roots, or a modern, dimensional finish.

What is lived-in hair colour?

Lived-in colour is not one single technique. It is more of a colour result.

The idea is to create hair colour that looks beautiful now, but also grows out softly. Instead of a harsh line at the root, your colour is blended so it works with your natural shade.

This can be a great option if you love your hair looking gorgeous, but do not want to be in the salon every few weeks. It can work especially well for blondes, brondes, soft brunettes and balayage clients.

Lived-in colour might include balayage, root shadowing, toning, glossing, face-framing pieces, lowlights or a mix of techniques. Your Belle Ame stylist will choose the best combination for your hair, using their experience and creativity to create a colour that feels tailored to you.

What is face-framing colour?

Not every colour appointment has to be a full transformation.

Sometimes, adding brightness around the face is enough to make your whole look feel fresher. Face-framing colour can soften your features, brighten your complexion and make your hair feel more styled, even when the rest of your colour is quite natural.

This can be done with highlights, balayage, babylights or a more statement “money piece”, depending on how bold you want to be.

It is a lovely option if you want a noticeable change, but you are not ready for a full head of colour.

What is a gloss or colour refresh?

Sometimes your hair colour does not need a dramatic change. It just needs refreshing.

Colour can fade over time because of washing, heat styling, sun exposure, hard water, styling products and general wear and tear. Blonde can become brassy, brunette can look flat, red can fade, and balayage can lose that fresh salon glow.

A colour refresh, toner or gloss can bring the shine and tone back without starting from scratch.

This can be especially helpful between bigger appointments if you want to keep your hair looking healthy, polished and expensive.

What if you want a big colour change or creative colour?

If you are dreaming of a bigger transformation, such as going from brunette to blonde, changing your colour completely, or trying a creative colour like pink, blue, purple or vivid copper, this usually needs a more detailed consultation first.

Big colour changes can look amazing, but they often need careful planning. For example, if you have brunette hair and want to go blonde, your hair will usually need to be lightened gradually. How quickly this can happen depends on your natural colour, whether your hair has been coloured before, the condition of your hair, and how blonde you want to be.

Previously coloured brunette hair can be especially tricky because artificial colour does not always lift evenly. Some areas may lift warmer, darker or more slowly than others. This is why going brunette to blonde may take more than one appointment, especially if the aim is a clean, bright or cooler blonde.

Creative colours can also need preparation. Pink, blue, purple and pastel tones often need the hair to be lightened first so the colour has a clean enough base to show properly. A pastel pink or icy blue will usually need the hair to be lifted much lighter than a deeper red, plum or copper.

That does not mean your dream colour is off the table. It just means your stylist may need to plan it carefully to protect the condition of your hair and create the best result. Sometimes the safest and most beautiful route is to move towards your goal in stages, with treatments, toners and home care in between.

If you want transformational colour or something more creative, the best thing to do is book a consultation, bring inspiration pictures, and be open about your hair history. One of our experienced Belle Ame hairstylists can talk you through what is realistic, what maintenance may be involved, and the safest route to getting you closer to the colour you love.

Do you need a consultation before hair colour?

For many colour appointments, a consultation is really helpful, especially if you are new to Belle Ame, planning a big change, correcting a previous colour, going lighter, or you are not sure what you need.

A member of our friendly team will look at your hair’s condition, current colour, natural colour, hair history and the look you want to achieve. They will also talk to you about maintenance, budget and what is realistic.

This part really matters. Hair colour is not just about choosing a pretty picture. It is about creating a result that suits your hair, your skin tone, your lifestyle and how often you want to come back to the salon.

It is also helpful to be honest about your hair history, including box dye, previous bleaching, colour corrections, home toners or anything else you have used. We are not here to judge. We just need the full picture so we can look after your hair properly.

You may also need a skin test before certain colour services, especially if you are new to the salon or have not had colour with us before. We can let you know what is needed when you book.

If you’re making a hair salon booking and you’re unsure which colour service to choose, get in touch with our team, and we can guide you.

How do you choose the right hair colour?

The “best” hair colour is not just the trendiest one. It is the one that suits you.

A good colour should work with your features, your haircut, your hair condition, your routine and your confidence level. Some people love high-maintenance blonde and regular salon visits. Others want soft, low-maintenance colour that grows out gently. Some want grey coverage every few weeks. Others want a seasonal refresh twice a year.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. That is why a great hairdressing salon will always tailor the colour to you, rather than simply copying a picture.

Hair colour FAQs

What type of hair colour is best for covering grey hair?

Permanent colour or root colour is often used for grey coverage, depending on your hair and the result you want. Your stylist can advise what will give the best coverage and finish.

What is the difference between highlights and balayage?

Highlights are often placed in foils for a more structured lightening effect, while balayage is traditionally painted or placed in a softer, more blended way for a more natural grow-out.

Do I need a toner after highlights or balayage?

Many lightening services benefit from a toner because it refines, softens or enhances the final shade. Toner is often used after highlights or balayage, but toners, glosses or colour-refreshing services can also be used on brunette, copper, red, grey or silver tones.

Is balayage lower maintenance than highlights?

Balayage can be lower maintenance because it usually has a softer root area and grows out more naturally than traditional highlights.

Can I go from brunette to blonde in one appointment?

Sometimes it may be possible to go noticeably lighter in one appointment, but going from brunette to blonde often takes more than one visit, especially if your hair has been coloured before. Your stylist will need to look at your starting colour, hair history and hair condition before advising what is realistic and safe for your hair.

Can I have creative hair colour like pink, blue or purple?

Creative colours such as pink, blue, purple or vivid copper often need a consultation first. The hair may need to be lightened before the creative colour is applied, and the result will depend on your starting colour, hair history and hair condition.

Can I book hair colour online at Belle Ame Lancaster?

You can book online where available, but if you are unsure which colour service to choose, it is best to contact the salon first so the team can guide you.

Do I need a consultation before changing my hair colour?

A consultation is recommended if you are new to the salon, planning a big colour change, going lighter, correcting previous colour, or unsure which service you need. You may also need a skin test before certain colour services.
